Loose Skin After Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric surgery helps many patients to lose a tremendous amount of weight and keep it off long term. Unfortunately, patients who have these operations are sometimes surprised at the way their bodies look after they have accomplished their comendable weight loss goals. Many of them start looking for plastic surgery to help tame the excess skin laxity that develops. I started my career working with a bariatric surgery group of surgeons that was performing over 1,000 gastric bypass operations each year. Frankly, back in those days I had difficulty keeping up with the volume of work that they would send … Continue reading

Tattoo Removal Procedures Getting Better, But Still Not There

I came across an article claiming that tattoo removal is getting better with the use of various lasers. While this may be true, I’m concerned because many patients don’t understand how difficult it is to completely remove a tattoo. Even in what doctors call “good” outcomes, there is many times a “ghost” of the tattoo left behind when treatment is complete. The fact is that we need to use different lasers for different tattoo colors, which can prolong andcomplicate the process. Furthermore, treatments can be quite uncomfortable. For all of these reasons, I caution my friends to avoid getting inked … Continue reading

Tummy Tuck Removes C-Section Scars

I have been asked many times if a tummy tuck scar would be made above or below a C-section scar. Patients seem to think that they will end up with two separate scars from the procedures. That’s not how it works. The truth is that I routinely make my tummy tuck incisions below the C-section scars and remove any evidence of the C-section all together. That is to say, the C-section scar is completely removed, and the patient is left with only the tummy tuck scar. This may be longer than the original C-section scar, but it is closed by … Continue reading

FDA Report on Breast Implants and Possible Lymphoma Risk

Last week the FDA announced that it was investigating a “possible association” between a very rare form of lymphoma and breast implants (both saline and silicone).  Before I go much farther let me point out a few details: Breast implants have NOT been proven to cause cancer The FDA does NOT recommend that women with implants have them removed The questions raised involve BOTH silicone AND saline implants I have taken a little time to look into this and find it very intriguing.  I tracked down the actual report from the FDA itself and am attaching a link for anyone … Continue reading

“I heard that if you have liposuction and then gain weight, the fat will go somewhere else” – Oh My!

This is a topic that continues to come up time and time again.  I am continually asked not only what happens to liposuctioned areas with weight gain, but also what happens  to non-liposuctioned areas.  There seems to be a fear out there that if one has liposuction and then gains weight that other areas of your body might become disproportionately larger or even freakish. First, let’s put this into perspective.  Liposuction is best performed on patients who are overall in pretty good shape, but just have an area or two that is stubbornly large.  The classic example is the woman … Continue reading
