Excess fat, especially in the upper arms, can be embarrassing and frustrating, and can hamper your efforts to look healthy and fit. Arm liposuction here in NYC is an excellent choice for selectively reducing fat in this area, and creating leaner, more toned looking arms.
Several options exist for patients who want to improve their upper arms. During your consultation, Dr. Sterry works with you to help you choose the best one for you.
Ideal candidates for arm liposuction are people whose complaints are primarily related to excess fat. If excess, sagging skin is present, then a surgical arm lift may be a better alternative. Liposuction is not appropriate for people who are bothered by excess skin or have poor skin elasticity, as removing fat can exacerbate this effect.
Ideal candidates are also people who are in generally good health, and free of conditions that could complicate surgery or the healing process.
Dr. Sterry offers both traditional tumescent liposuction as well as Smartlipo™, which utilizes a laser (as an additional step in the liposuction process) to help melt fat in the arms, making the action of liposuction that much more efficient. Smartlipo is also touted by the company to help tighten skin in treated areas.
Smartlipo uses laser energy to loosen and emulsify fat before removal, ensuring an easier suction process and minimal trauma to surrounding tissues. Additionally, the laser energy used during Smartlipo can help stimulate collagen development, leading to tighter skin near the treatment area. This added benefit can help enhance your results.
However, the additional procedure using the laser means that Smartlipo is actually MORE invasive than traditional tumescent liposuction. That said, the healing time for both procedures is very similar. We don't see any significant difference in recovery periods, but the Smartlipo patients do seem to have better results in general than traditional liposuction.
Depending on the specifics of your arm liposuction procedure, Dr. Sterry may use sedation administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, or local anesthesia. For both traditional and Smartlipo, Dr. Sterry injects your unwanted fat with the tumescent solution containing a local anesthetic, lidocaine, and ephinephrine (adrenaline). He then makes a series of very small incisions on your upper arms. He uses these incisions to access your unwanted fat, using a long, thin tube called a cannula to break it apart and suction it away. In the case of Smartlipo, the cannula contains a laser fiber that melts the fat prior to suctioning.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, but you'll need someone to drive you home after your surgery. Depending on the exact technique used during your surgery, you may need to take up to 1 week off from work and other daily activities, but most patients are back to work after a long weekend. It may take a bit more time before you're able to get back to strenuous activities and working out. Keep in mind that swelling may make it difficult to evaluate your ultimate results until several weeks have passed.
