Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.
It's no secret that African American patients are hesitant about tummy tuck surgery (or any other surgical procedures for that matter) due to their fear about how they will heal. With my practice located in New York City, I get the chance to work on just about every type of skin in the world. Having worked with thousands of patients over the years I don't see much of a difference in the way most of us heal. Sure, there are a couple of darker skinned patients who made thick scars, but I also have a couple of very light skinned people who did the exact same thing.
This patient is a 38 year old African American woman who had one child, was single, and wanted to have a flatter tummy. I did the tummy tuck with liposuction completely around her torso because I find that it's the lipo that makes us look slim and sexy - the tummy tuck only addresses flattening of the belly. The tummy tuck scar is well hidden below the bikini line which SHE chose (I always let the patients decide what kind of bathing suit they want to wear and I tailor my surgery plan around that style).
In her results (shown about 6 months after the tummy tuck) you can clearly see a nice change in her overall appearance. She swears that she hasn't lost any weight and seems very happy with the outcome.
